From burning calories to creating a mindful exercise routine, the way I like to think of Reformer Pilates is a jump and a leap to the next stage; much like Pilates, Reformer Pilates is a complete and thorough body workout. It takes your body and mind into a new realm of conditioning.

It is important to always push yourself, gently, but improving your practice and giving your body a full workout is definitely what Reformer is all about.

Beginner’s Reformer Pilates, much like regular Pilates let’s you set the pace of your class.

It focuses on posture, alignment, and balance while completely homing in on key areas of your body such as your hips, core, gluts and lower back, all of which are fundamental in creating space through centering your body.

The benefits you gain from doing Pilates with these incredible pieces of equipment helps aid and encourage breath control, core strength and mindful flow. Areas of particular interest when using reformer machinery are:

  • Stress relief – Believe it or not, and I wouldn’t have before my first beginners reformer class, but the gentle motion of these machines is an incredibly soothing and relaxing experience. It is almost as calming as a still ocean, while your movements glide smoothly from position to position.

  • Endurance – The effect reformer machinery has on your muscle endurance is quite simply, phenomenal. Like with any exercise the more you do it, the better the effects. By practicing Reformer Pilates, the muscle tissue strengthens, the muscles

get stronger and everyday chores don’t seem quite so hard. Fatigue can be a huge factor in your everyday life, practicing muscle endurance helps you mind and body feel more active and able.

  • Breathe Deeply – Breathing is something most of us think very little about, it happens all day everyday and that’s about all we think we need to know. Pilates has always promoted and taught how the art of breath can help during not only your practice but through general day to day activities that can soothe stresses, pains, anxiety and fatigue. Reformer opens the body up; it creates space, where space is needed. It uses the skill of ‘Pilates breathing’ in conjunction with the motion and exercise on the machine. The lungs become more alert and better equipped to deal with increasing your oxygen supply, providing you with more energy and sustainability.
